"Our Filthy Rags"

Psalm 143:1, 2  "Hear my prayer, O LORD, Give ear to my supplications!
In Your faithfulness answer me, And in Your righteousness.  Do not enter into judgment with Your servant, For in Your sight no one living is righteous."

Isaiah 64:6-8  "But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousness are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.  And there is no one who calls on Your name, Who stirs himself up to take hold of You; For You have hidden Your face from us, And have consumed us because of our iniquities.  But now, O LORD, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand."

Luke 18:16, 17  "But Jesus called them to Him and said, 'Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.  Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.'"

Revelation 4:8-11  "The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: 'Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!'  Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: 'You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created."

Insight: Our good deeds are like filthy rags to God.  Why?  Well, God has done so much for us and the little things we do for Him pale in comparison.  Furthermore, nobody is righteous and we all fall short of God's glorious ideal.  Continue doing good deeds in Jesus' name, but don't let your deeds make you become prideful because we owe God far more than we give Him.

Prayer: "Dear Lord, thank you for loving us so much.  Bless us and lift us up.  There is no other like You.  Thank you for accepting our good deeds, even though they are like filthy rags to You.  Praise You for being worthy.  Thank you for the awesome example we find in Revelation of the crowns being cast at your feet.  We love You Lord and we thank you for saving and redeeming us.  In Jesus' name, Amen."

America's Foundation

John Hancock (1737-1793), an American merchant and Revolutionary leader, was the president of the Provincial Congress of Massachusetts.  He became well known for having been the first member of the Continental Congress to sign the Declaration of Independence.

On April 15, 1775, the Provincial Congress of Massachusetts declared A Day of Public Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer, signed by the President of the Provincial Congress, John Hancock:

"In circumstances dark as these, it becomes us, as Men and Christians, to reflect that, whilst every prudent Measure should be taken to ward off the impending Judgements ....  All confidence must be withheld from the Means we use; and reposed only on that GOD who rules in the Armies of Heaven, and without whose Blessing the best human Counsels are but Foolishness - and all created Power Vanity;

"It is the Happiness of his Church that, when the Powers of Earth and Hell combine against it... that the Throne of Grace is of the easiest access - and its Appeal thither is graciously invited by the Father of Mercies, who has assured it, that when his Children ask Bread he will not give them a Stone ....

"RESOLVED, That it be, and hereby is recommended to the good People of this Colony of all Denominations, that THURSDAY the Eleventh Day of May next be set apart as a Day of Public Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer ... to confess the sins ... to implore the Forgiveness of all our Transgression ... and a blessing on he Husbandry, Manufactures, and other lawful Employments of this People; and especially that the union of the American Colonies in Defence of their Rights (for hitherto we desire to thank Almighty GOD) may be preserved and confirmed ....  And that AMERICA man soon behold a gracious Interposition of Heaven.

"By Order of the [Massachusetts] Provincial Congress, John Hancock, President." ¹

On November 8, 1783, Governor John Hancock, from Boston, Massachusetts, issued A Proclamation for a Day of Thanksgiving to celebrate the victorious conclusion of the Revolutionary War:

"John Hancock, Esquire

"Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

"A Proclamation for a Day of Thanksgiving:

"Whereas ... these United States are not only happily rescued from the Danger and Calamities to which they have been so long exposed, but their Freedom, Sovereignty and Independence ultimately acknowledged.

"And whereas ... the Interposition of Divine Providence in our Favor hath been most abundantly and most graciously manifested, and the Citizens of these United States have every Reason for Praise and Gratitude to the God of their salvation.

"Impressed therefore with an exalted Sense of the Blessings by which we are surrounded, and of our entire Dependence on that Almighty Being from whose Goodness and Bounty they are derived;

"I do by and with the Advice of the Council appoint Thursday the Eleventh Day of December next (the Day recommended by the Congress to all the States) to be religiously observed as a Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer, that all the People may then assemble to celebrate ... that he hath been pleased to continue to us the Light of the Blessed Gospel; ... That we also offer up fervent Supplications ... to cause pure Religion and Virtue to flourish ... and to fill the World with his glory." ²

JCSM's Challenge

Have you ever read John 3:16?  If so, where do you put the emphasis?  Take a couple of minutes, right now, to read this awesome verse and emphasize the bold word below.  It will have new and special meaning to you!

God bless you as you meet this week's challenge!

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained

"The Skeptic's Annotated Bible" claims:

Exodus 1:5 - "And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls." But this contradicts Acts 7:14 which says there were 75.

"The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained" responds:

This was addressed in Genesis.  Acts 7:14 says that seventy-five of Jacob's kindred came to Egypt.  There were five "kindred" that weren't mentioned by name.  This Hebrew word refers to relatives and people with a familial relationship.  This doesn't contradict the statement in Exodus 1:5 where it is said "all the souls that come out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls."

(This explanation came from "The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained", by Jason Gastrich.  This book is on CD and gives over 4,000 answers to alleged Bible errors, regarding the entire Bible at http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.org.  There is also a 300 question workbook that accompanies the CD-ROM.)

Quotes of the Week

The year of the Jubilee, in ancient Israel, would have made the people closer to equal, if they would have followed and obeyed it.
