In John 8:25-45, Jesus is talking to the Pharisees and other Jews about His relationship with God the Father. He is also talking to them about Abraham and their connection to Him. It is apparent that the Jews felt like they were entitled to greatness and even salvation because of their heritage and their relationship with Abraham. However, Jesus dispels this notion. In fact, He tells them that their father is the devil because they are trying to kill Him and this is something that Abraham would never do.

These Jews were so blind to their sin and what it was doing to them, they told Christ that they were already free. Not only was this a foolish thing to say, in general, but it was a very foolish thing to say to the One who reads minds and knows hearts. They could potentially fool themselves, but they could not fool God.

After Jesus exposes their need for salvation, the Jews cannot form an intelligent reply. They do not try and point to their sinlessness, which they’ve been alluding to. They do not try and point to Jesus’ sinfulness, which they’ve also been alluding to. All they can do is try and insult the Savior by calling Him a Samaritan and a demoniac.

In first century Israel, it’s quite possible that no greater insult could exist than for one Jew to call another Jew a Samaritan. The Jews hated the Samaritans because they were part Jewish and part Gentile, while the Jews had been required to avoid marrying outside of their race. However, Jesus ignores the blatant attempt to enrage Him, answers kindly and intelligently, and continues preaching and teaching His important message.
