"Pride vs. Humility" - #398
February 21, 2005
Hello!
I pray that you had a great week.
JCSM is now hosting the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (ISBE)! This exhaustive reference book has nearly 10,000 entries/files that cover the various words in the Bible. You can use this free resource here: http://jcsm.org/StudyCenter/ISBE/
We have an extra copy of a fantastic book on fasting. It's called "God's Chosen Fast," by Arthur Wallis. If you'd like this book, just email us and we'll pay the shipping. We'll give it away to the first person who replies to this email.
I've found a list of 2100 atheists on the internet. These are atheists that have asked for an "atheist number." I'm going to be praying for one each day. Please pray that they repent from their sins and trust Jesus Christ for salvation. Here is the list: http://jcsm.org/1on1/AltAtheismAtheistAgnosticList.htm.
We pray that you are blessed as you follow Christ and His will for you.
Please pray that the rain doesn't cause any accidents or deaths in San Diego. In my city, so far this season, we have received more rain than Seattle! Not only are drivers not used to it, but the soil isn't used to it either and it has caused some problems. On the other hand, it will be a blessing in the summer months when we have more water.
My flag football team did very well on Saturday. We are getting along famously and we won big. Please pray that we continue to gel and have fun.

This is your ministry, so please feel free to link to JCSM and forward these devotions to your friends and family. On JCSM, there are over 90,000 web pages of pictures, forums, midis, Bible lessons, humor, proverbial stories, links, devotions, poetry, prayer journals, and much more!
JCSM has encouraging sermons, exciting debates, and the Bible on MP3 online and you can freely stream and download them! Come and listen at http://sa.jcsm.org.
Visit the JCSM Study Center! We have over 1GB of resources like English and foreign Bibles, thousands of sermons, maps, ancient literature, commentaries, Greek and Hebrew dictionaries, and concordances and much more! Plus, it's all free. Link: http://study.jcsm.org.

Proverb 8:13 "The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance
and the evil way
And the perverse mouth I hate."
Proverb 13:10 "By pride comes nothing but strife, But with the well-advised is wisdom."
Proverb 16:18, 19 "Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud."
Proverb 29:23 "A man’s pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor."
1 John 2:16, 17 "For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever."
James 4:10 "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up."
1 Peter 5:6, 7 "Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you."
Insight: Christians need to be humble. We also need to give God the glory for things. God will humble the proud and exalt the humble. Make sure to be humble and meek and avoid the sin of pride.
Prayer: "Dear Lord, thank you for warning us about pride. Help us to avoid being prideful. Let us be confident in You and your promises, though. Let us be humble and meek. Give us all of your qualities. Thank you for the perfect example in Jesus Christ. Forgive our sins. Purify us. Bless us, increase our ministries, lay your hand on us, and keep us from evil. To You be all the glory, honor, and praise. In Jesus' name, Amen."
"And ye shall make hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof; it shall be a jubilee." - Committee on the Restoration of Independence Hall, Mayor's Office. Report. Philadelphia, June 12, 1873. Library of Congress Rare Book Collection, Washington D.C., pp. 2-3. Catherine Millard, A Children's Companion Guide to America's History (Camp Hill, PA: Horizon House Publishers, 1993) p. 31.
The inscription cast onto the bell, August 172, read:
"Proclaim liberty through all the land and to all the inhabitants thereof. (Leviticus XXV. 10) - "Our Christian Heritage," Letter from Plymouth Rock (Marlborough, NH: The Plymouth Rock Foundation), p. 2.
The Liberty Bell got its name for being rung July 8, 1776, at the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. - David Barton, The Myth of Separation (Aledo, TX: WallBuilder Press, 1991), p. 100. It cracked as it rand at the funeral for Chief Justice Marshall in 1835. - Catherine Millard, The Rewriting of America's History (Camp Hill, PA: Horizon House Publishers, 1991), p. 265.
If all you do is attend a weekly church service, you're really not part of the church.
This was a quote from my pastor - Miles McPhearson. He makes a good point. The body of Christ isn't for visiting once a week. We all need to plug in and use our spiritual gifts for the body of Christ.
Some churches don't have membership lists. Why? Their "list" is whether or not any of the pastors in the church know you. If you are plugged into the church, you'll have a relationship with a church leader, so there is no need for a list.
Plug into your local church. If you simply occupy a seat on Sunday, join a small group. I'm in one with my church and it's great.
Your church probably has many ministries, too. You could join the prison ministry, the usher/greeter/parking ministry, the prayer ministry, the choir, etc. Seek God and see where you should plug in, then follow His lead.
By the way, if you haven't found a good, local church, let me know. I can help you find one.
God bless you as you meet this week's challenge!

The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained
"The Skeptic's Annotated Bible" claims:
Genesis 21:23-24 - Abraham swears to God, apparently with God's approval. Yet such oaths are condemned in Mt.5:34-37 and Jas.5:12.
"The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained" responds:
This Hebrew word for "swear" means "to take an oath." In other words, Abraham made a promise. Don't confuse this with swearing (like using profanity), cursing or taking God's name in vain.
In Matthew 5:34-37 and James 5:12, we are told to be trustworthy. "Let your 'Yes' be 'Yes' and your 'No' be 'No' is Jesus' way of saying that we shouldn't need to swear for someone to take us seriously. Be an honorable person of your word, then you simply have to say "Yes" or "No" and you will be believed and trusted.
(This explanation came from "The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained", by Jason Gastrich. This book is on CD and explains over 3,000 difficulties regarding the entire Bible at http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.org. There is also a 300 question workbook that accompanies the CD-ROM.)
If you don't realize you're in a spiritual battle, you're right where the Devil wants you.
John the Baptist broke the long, prophetic silence.
If someone asks you what God has called you to do, you need to have an answer for them.
Your spiritual gifts and natural talents are compatible and should be used for God's glory.
The voice you hear that tells you to pray and obey is from the Holy Spirit.
God hasn't given you spiritual gifts to do a natural job. He gave them to you to do a supernatural task.
Who can look you in the eye and tell you what you need to hear?
The Christian life isn't a life of collecting. It's a life of receiving and giving.
You can measure the greatness of a person by how much they learn after they think they know everything.
God will never take your heart. You have to volunteer it to Him.
These quotes came from God, me, and Miles McPhearson.
Do you need more quotes? We have thousands in our archives! They are located here: http://quotes.jcsm.org.
These quotes can be used for sanctification and fun. Most of them are directly based on scripture and scriptural principles. Some of the quotes are humorous or rhetorical, others are written from sermons and Bible studies, and some are lyrics from songs. If you’d like me to go into more detail on any of them, please email me.
Like most verses in the Bible, they can be debated. To use what I’ve written in the most beneficial way, try and trace them back to the scriptures and apply the true principles to your life in a meaningful way! Please don’t sell my quotes or publish them for profit. If English is not your first language, you may not understand some of the quotes. I'm sorry, but some of them are English metaphors and deal with multiple word meanings. God bless you all!
Please make a commitment to pray for this ministry. As every believer is tempted and tried, this ministry faces trials also. God has blessed me, JCSM and the people who have been reached! Unfortunately, the enemy knows this and spiritual warfare is the result. Please at least pray that the devotions continue to be written religiously, the web pages stay on the www and the readers are blessed, sanctified and protected from evil. Thank you very much in advance!
Do you want to help people receive the good news? We’re reaching new people every day with God’s awesome Word! If God has blessed you and you wish to send a love offering to JCSM, please send your gift to the address below.

Along with getting support, we also give support! JCSM regularly gives to churches, Christian ministries, and needy people. Another function of this ministry is to do counseling. We are always answering questions about life, the Lord and everything in between. Lastly, we do a lot of research on religious topics on the internet and library. You will definitely see the results of our hard work and your loving support, in the web pages, and in the weekly devotions!
