"Satan's Strengths and Weaknesses"

Job 1:7-12  "And the LORD said to Satan, 'From where do you come?'  So Satan answered the LORD and said, 'From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.'  Then the LORD said to Satan, 'Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?'  So Satan answered the LORD and said, 'Does Job fear God for nothing?  Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side?  You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.  But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!'  And the LORD said to Satan, 'Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person.'  So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD."

1) Satan is accountable to God. 1:6

2) His thoughts are open to God. 1:7

3) Satan can only be at one place at a time. 1:6,7

4) Satan cannot see into our minds or foretell the future. 1:9-11

5) Because Satan can do nothing without God's permission, God's people can overcome his attacks through God's power. 1:12

6) God always puts limits on what Satan can do. 1:12, and 2:6

7) Satan is real and active on earth. 1:7

2 Corinthians 11:14b  "Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light."

1 Peter 5:8  "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour."

Insight: How well do you know your enemy?  Do you know his strengths and weaknesses?  If you do, then you can prepare for him.  Take notice of how the enemy tempts you and take steps to avoid or overcome the temptation.  He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Prayer: "Dear Lord, thank you for loving us so much.  Thank you for warning us about our enemy and giving us plenty of information about him.  Help us to understand his ways and learn how we can overcome his promptings.  Thank you for your Holy Spirit.  Help us to be sensitive to His promptings.  Thank you for being faithful to us, Lord.  Bless us and lift us up.  Let us follow You closely.  Forgive us for sinning and help us to stay on the right path.  We love You Lord and we pray this in Jesus' name, Amen."

America's Foundation

John Jay (1745-1829), was the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, having been appointed by President George Washington.  He was a Founding Father, a member of the First and Second Continental Congresses and even served as the President of the Continental Congress.  He was very instrumental in causing the Constitution to be ratified by writing the Federalist Papers, along with James Madison and Alexander Hamilton.  In 1777, John Jay helped to write the Constitution of New York, and from 1795-1801 held the position of Governor of the State of New York.

John Jay negotiated the peace treaty to end the War with England (along with John Adams and Benjamin Franklin).  He was Secretary of Foreign Affairs under the Articles of Confederation, minister to Spain and in 1794 he authored the Jay Treaty which prevented the United States from getting involved in the war between France and England.

In addition to being appointed by President George Washington as the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, John Jay was also elected president of the Westchester Bible Society in 1818 and president of the American Bible Society in 1821.  On October 12, 1816, John Jay admonished:

"Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers."  - The Correspondence and Public Papers of John Jay, Henry P. Johnson, ed (NY: Burt Franklin, 1970), Vol. IV, p. 393, October 12, 1816.  David Barton, The Myth of Separation (Aledo, TX: Wallbuilder Press, 1991), pp. 78,119,152.  B.F. Morris, Christian Life and Character of the Civil Institutions of the United States (Philadelphia: George W. Childs, 1864), p. 154.  Peter Marshall and David Manuel, The Glory of America (Bloomington, MN: Garborg's Heart'N Home, Inc., 1991), 11.5.

On May 13, 1824, serving as its president, John Jay gave an address to the American Bible Society:

"By conveying the Bible to people thus circumstanced we certainly do them a most interesting kindness.  We thereby enable them to learn that man was originally created and placed in a state of happiness, but becoming disobedient, was subjected to the degradation and evils which he and his posterity have since experienced.

"The Bible will also inform them that our gracious Creator has provided for us a Redeemer, in whom all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; that this Redeemer has made atonement 'for the sins of the whole world,' and thereby reconciling the Divine justice with the Divine mercy has opened a way for our redemption and salvation; and that these inestimable benefits are of the free gift and grace of God, not of our deserving, nor in our power to deserve."  - May 13, 1824, in an address to the American Bible Society.  Stephen Abbott Northrop, D.D., A Cloud of Witnesses (Portland, Oregon: American Heritage Ministries, 1987), p. 251.  John Eidsmoe, Christianity and the Constitution (MI: Baker Book House, 1987), p. 170.  Peter Marshall and David Manuel, The Glory of America (Bloomington, MN: Garborg's Heart'N Home, Inc., 1991), 5.13.

John Jay stated:

"In forming and settling my belief relative to the doctrines of Christianity, I adopted no articles from creeds but such only as, on careful examination, I found to be confirmed by the Bible....  At a party in Paris, once, the question fell on religious matter.  In the course of it, one of them asked me if I believed in Christ?  I answered that I did, and that I thanked God that I did."  - George Pellew, American Statesman Series, p. 360.  Stephen Abbott Northrop, D.D., A Cloud of Witnesses (Portland, Oregon: American Heritage Ministries, 1987), p. 251.

A Moment of Introspection

On February 2, 1848, Mexico formally ceded the California territory to the United States. The transaction was part of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended a war between Mexico and the United Sates. Even though Mexico possessed great riches when it possessed California, the Mexican government had to yield the territory. Mexico was a defeated foe. In much the same way, the angel Lucifer had to surrender his heavenly glory after leading a rebellion in Heaven against the rule of God Himself.

JCSM's Challenge

After the day is complete, take a pen and paper and write all of the ways that you were tempted.  You could note whether you failed or not.  Make a plan regarding how you can overcome temptation next time.  There is a good chance that you will be tempted the same way and even by the same thing or things, again.

God bless you as you meet this week's challenge!

Word of the Week

pirasmos (Greek, see Matthew 6:13): a putting to proof, (by experiment of good, by experience of evil, solicitation, discipline, or provocation), by implication adversity, temptation

The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained

"The Skeptic's Annotated Bible" claims:

Genesis 17:16 - God blesses the union between Abraham and his sister (Gen.20:12), though he condemns such incestuous marriages in Lev.18:9, Lev.20:17, and Dt.27:22.

"The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained" responds:

This is correct.  At this point, intermarriages were all right and later they became forbidden.

(This explanation came from "The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained", by Jason Gastrich.  This book is on CD and explains over 3,000 difficulties regarding the entire Bible at http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.org.  There is also a 300 question workbook that accompanies the CD-ROM.)

Quotes of the Week

The Bible has a hopeful message for us.

You release the Holy Spirit's power through your testimony.

When you enter an unknown area, fall back on what you know.

We weren't made or meant to die.  We were meant to live for eternity.

Separation from God (life and light) is death and darkness.

Sin is missing the mark.

Before we knew the Lord, we were getting blown around.

Evil is more than human weakness.

Do your best, then commit the rest to God.

Any dead fish can flow downstream.  It takes a strong, living fish to swim against the current.

God wants to spend time with you, bless you, and encourage you.

God doesn't lose His temper and act inappropriately.

The only thing God gets angry at is evil.

God and humans should be angry at evil.

God started loving us before we started loving Him.

God loves us when we rejected Him.

God's eternal plan for us involves Him loving us.

God's love keeps unfolding.

These quotes came from God, me, Chuck Smith, and Ray Bentley.

Do you need more quotes?  We have thousands in our archives!  They are located here: http://quotes.jcsm.org.

These quotes can be used for sanctification and fun.  Most of them are directly based on scripture and scriptural principles.  Some of the quotes are humorous or rhetorical, others are written from sermons and Bible studies, and some are lyrics from songs.  If you’d like me to go into more detail on any of them, please email me.

Like most verses in the Bible, they can be debated.  To use what I’ve written in the most beneficial way, try and trace them back to the scriptures and apply the true principles to your life in a meaningful way!  Please don’t sell my quotes or publish them for profit.  If English is not your first language, you may not understand some of the quotes.  I'm sorry, but some of them are English metaphors and deal with multiple word meanings.  God bless you all!

Please make a commitment to pray for this ministry.  As every believer is tempted and tried, this ministry faces trials also.  God has blessed me, JCSM and the people who have been reached!  Unfortunately, the enemy knows this and spiritual warfare is the result.  Please at least pray that the devotions continue to be written religiously, the web pages stay on the www and the readers are blessed, sanctified and protected from evil.  Thank you very much in advance!

Do you want to help people receive the good news?  We’re reaching new people every day with God’s awesome Word!  If God has blessed you and you wish to send a love offering to JCSM, please send your gift to the address below.

You can join our vision and help this ministry!  Your donations will keep these ministries running and further our visions for evangelism.  We host tens of thousands of web pages to lead people to the Lord.  Frequently, we make new ones and they are used to bring more and more people into a closer relationship with Jesus Christ.
