Hello!

I hope you had an enjoyable weekend.

Have you heard about Google's new 1GB email accounts?  They are very handy, but you can only get one by invitation.  Google has given me a bunch of them and I'll give them to you if you email me.  I'll give away these free email account invitations to the first five people who email me.  Good luck!  Contact link: http://jcsm.org/contact.php.

Did you know that some people think the KJV is the only inerrant Bible in the world?  These "King James Onlyists" or "Single-Translation-Onlyists" actually think the KJV is more accurate than the Greek and Hebrew from which it was taken!  Right now, I'm debating a KJV-Onlyist in a popular, Baptist discussion forum.  If you'd like to follow the debate, please go to http://kjvonlyism.jcsm.org.

My debate with Jon Promnitz (an agnostic) is going well.  He is taking the preterist perspective and saying that all of the prophecies regarding the Second Coming of Christ could only refer to the 1st century (and that they failed).  Of course, not all of these prophecies referred to the 1st century.  Some refer to a future event that Christians eagerly anticipate.

This has been a fun debate and we have finished three out of seven rounds.  You can see it here: http://iidebate4.jcsm.org.  Please pray for the innumerable atheists who are reading and will be reading because this debate is on an extremely popular, atheist forum.

This Sunday, we heard Greg Laurie speak at Shadow Mountain Community Church.  He was very good.  Please pray for him as he opens the Republican National Convention with a prayer on Tuesday night.

Please pray for my final exam in Christian Philosophy.  I will be taking it very soon and it won't be easy.

This is your ministry, so please feel free to link to JCSM and forward these devotions to your friends and family.  On JCSM, there are over 70,000 web pages of pictures, forums, midis, Bible lessons, humor, proverbial stories, links, devotions, poetry, prayer journals, and much more!

JCSM has encouraging sermons, exciting debates, and the Bible on MP3 online and you can freely stream and download them!  Come and listen at http://sa.jcsm.org.

Visit the JCSM Study Center!  We have over 1GB of resources like English and foreign Bibles, thousands of sermons, maps, ancient literature, commentaries, Greek and Hebrew dictionaries, and concordances and much more!  Plus, it's all free.  Link: http://study.jcsm.org.

"Dealing With Temptation"

Matthew 26:41  "Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation.  The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

John 16:33  "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

James 1:13, 14  "Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am tempted by God'; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.  But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed."

1 Corinthians 10:13  "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it."

Ephesians 6:13-18  "Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints."

Insight: God will always give us a way to escape or overcome temptation.  Are you looking for these ways?  Once you begin to understand the effects of sin, you'll want to be godly and avoid falling into temptation at all costs.

Prayer: "Dear Lord, keep us from evil.  Thank you for being faithful to us and thank you for not tempting us.  Help us understand You and your ways.  Help us to see evil coming a mile away and avoid it.  Praise You for giving us your power to overcome temptation.  Remind us that You are faithful and that You will not leave us.  Forgive us for the times when we have sinned.  Help us to forgive ourselves as well.  Let us be strong in You and remember that we aren't fighting for the victory.  We are fighting temptation from the victory because You have already overcome the world!  In Jesus' name, Amen."

America's Foundation

Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), the 12th President of the United States, was a military hero of both the Mexican War and the War of 1812.  On February 14, 1849, a delegation of ladies from Frankfurt, Kentucky presented President Taylor with a beautifully bound Bible and a copy of the Constitution of the United States.  He sent a message acknowledging their kindness, which was printed in the Frankfort Commonwealth, February 21, 1849:

"I accept with gratitude and pleasure your gift of this inestimable Volume.  It was for the love of the truths of this great Book that our fathers abandoned their native shores for the wilderness.  Animated by its lofty principles they toiled and suffered till the desert blossomed as a rose.

"The same truths sustained them in their resolutions to become a free nation; and guided by the wisdom of this Book they founded a government under which we have grown from three millions to more than twenty millions of people, and from being but a stock on the borders of this Continent we have spread from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

"I trust that their principles of liberty may extend, if without bloodshed, from the northern to the southern extremities of the Continent.  If there were in that Book nothing but its great precepts, 'All things whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, do ye even so to them,' and if that precept were obeyed, our government might extend over the whole Continent.

"Accept... my sincere thanks for the kind manner in which you have discharged this duty; and expressing again my hearty gratitude to the ladies for their beautiful gift; I pray that health, peace, and prosperity may long be continued to them."  - February 14, 1849.  Frankfort Commonwealth, February 21, 1849.  Stephen Abbott Northrop, D.D., A Cloud of Witnesses (Portland, Oregon: American Heritage Ministries, 1987), p. 447-448.

A Moment of Introspection

Years ago, Southern California police carried out an interesting sting operation.  They had a list of thousands of wanted criminals who had somehow evaded jail.  Instead of risking their lives by attempting to arrest each one, they sent all the criminals a letter telling them they had won a large amount of money in a drawing.

The police put signs and banners on a building, and placed balloons and even a clown on the outside to create a festive atmosphere in order to welcome the "winners."  As each criminal entered the building, he heard music and other sounds of celebration.  He was then ushered into a room where he smiled as his hand was shaken.  The facial expression changed from joy to unbelief as each was told, 'Congratulations, you have just won time in prison!'  Dozens of criminals made their way through the main doors, were arrested and ushered out the back door.

It was interesting to note that many of the lawbreakers admitted as they were apprehended, 'I thought it was a sting operation!'  However, they couldn't stay away because of their sinful nature.  They couldn't stand up to the temptation.

JCSM's Challenge

Which temptation is plaguing you?  How have you failed?  How have you tried to overcome it?

Plan a way to overcome one of the temptations that you face.  Pray against it and be determined to stay pure.  God bless you as you meet this week's challenge!

Word of the Week

The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained

"The Skeptic's Annotated Bible" claims:

Genesis 15:13 - How long was the Egyptian captivity? This verse says 400 years, but Ex.12:40 and Gal.3:17 say 430 years.

"The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained" responds:

First, this verse isn't referring to the Egyptian captivity. Genesis 15:13 reads, "Then He said to Abram: 'Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years.'"  This indicated that from the time when Isaac was first afflicted (which began at the time of his weaning in Genesis 21), to the time when the Israelites left Egypt, there would be four hundred years.  This was fulfilled and can be verified.  Click here for a timeline of these events.

In Exodus 12:40, it reads "Now the sojourn for the children of Israel, who lived in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years." This began when Abraham left Haran. He left Haran 25 years before Isaac was born (see Genesis 16:16).  Click here for a timeline of these events.

The entire sojourn was four hundred and thirty years and their affliction lasted four hundred years. Galatians 3:17 correlates with Exodus 12:40.  Click here for a timeline of these events.

(This explanation came from "The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained", by Jason Gastrich.  This book is on CD and explains over 3,000 difficulties regarding the entire Bible at http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.org.  There is also a 300 question workbook that accompanies the CD-ROM.)

Quotes of the Week

Testing and temptation can have a positive effect on the life of the believer.

Christians are like tea bags.  You don't know what's in them until they're in hot water.

Temptation generally comes after times of great blessing.

The enemy likes to attack when we are vulnerable.

We all have the potential to fall into sin.

Our own sinful nature is the root of most of our problems.

The best way to avoid going backwards is by going forward.

The best way to avoid walking by the flesh is by walking in the spirit.

Make sure you warn young Christians that they are going to be tempted.

The Devil wants to demolish the Christian leaders.

If you're serving the Lord, then you will be tempted.

When we are tempted, the best place to be is in God's will.

If you aren't being tempted, then perhaps you aren't making any strides for the kingdom of God.

God's Word is the primary weapon for winning our spiritual battles and overcoming temptation.

The Word of God is out primary tool in evangelism.

Success in the Christian life is dependent on how much of the Word you know and apply to your life.

New revelations that contradict the Bible are not true.

If it's true, it's not new.

Christians don't fight for victory.  They fight from victory.

These quotes came from God, me, and Greg Laurie.

Do you need more quotes?  We have thousands in our archives!  They are located here: http://quotes.jcsm.org.

These quotes can be used for sanctification and fun.  Most of them are directly based on scripture and scriptural principles.  Some of the quotes are humorous or rhetorical, others are written from sermons and Bible studies, and some are lyrics from songs.  If you’d like me to go into more detail on any of them, please email me.

Like most verses in the Bible, they can be debated.  To use what I’ve written in the most beneficial way, try and trace them back to the scriptures and apply the true principles to your life in a meaningful way!  Please don’t sell my quotes or publish them for profit.  If English is not your first language, you may not understand some of the quotes.  I'm sorry, but some of them are English metaphors and deal with multiple word meanings.  God bless you all!

Please make a commitment to pray for this ministry.  As every believer is tempted and tried, this ministry faces trials also.  God has blessed me, JCSM and the people who have been reached!  Unfortunately, the enemy knows this and spiritual warfare is the result.  Please at least pray that the devotions continue to be written religiously, the web pages stay on the www and the readers are blessed, sanctified and protected from evil.  Thank you very much in advance!

Do you want to help people receive the good news?  We’re reaching new people every day with God’s awesome Word!  If God has blessed you and you wish to send a love offering to JCSM, please send your gift to the address below.
